Opals in the Rough
While celebrating its centennial two years ago, American photographer Elliot Ross decided to visit the far-flung community of Coober Pedy. In the ‘Opal Capitol of the World’ he photographed not only the mines and subterranean houses, but more importantly the extraordinary people inhabiting this small town in the Outback.

The strength of the Sahawari women
The refugee crisis across Europe makes headlines, but it’s the people of Western Sahara who have been experiencing a refugee crisis for over 40 years. Last November was the 40th anniversary of Morocco’s invasion of Western Sahara, which forced thousands of refugees into the Algerian desert. They're still there today, living in refugee camps, dependent on international aid. Over there, it’s the Saharawari women who play a fundamental role in their matriarchal society.
